Why Lamaze Childbirth Classes?

Selecting a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator ensures that you will be attending a class taught by a competent, highly qualified educator who works as an advocate for childbearing women and their families. The Lamaze credential identifies an educator who has passed a rigorous examination in childbirth education and who supports the Lamaze Philosophy of Birth.

Instructor:

Classes are taught by an experienced Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator, Kimberly Mathews.


Lamaze International Philosophy of Birth:

  • Birth is normal, natural, and healthy
  • The experience of birth profoundly affects women and their families
  • Women's inner wisdom guides them through birth
  • Women's confidence and ability to give birth is either enhanced or diminished by the care provider and place of birth
  • Women have a right to give birth free from routine medical intervention
  • Birth can safely take place in birth centers and at home.
  • Childbirth education empowers women to make informed choices in health care, to assume responsibility for their health, and to trust their inner wisdom


What will you learn?

  • Normal labor, birth, and the early postpartum period (using videos of real births)
  • How to be active and informed participants during childbirth
  • Focused breathing techniques for labor
  • Other relaxation techniques and natural strategies to help you work with labor pain, such as massage, walking, position changes, and hydrotherapy
  • Tips to help your partner be encouraging and supportive during labor
  • The value of one-on-one professional support during labor
  • How to communicate with your healthcare team so your needs are met
  • Complications that could arise during labor and birth, and interventions that might be medically necessary
  • Medications used and the risks/benefits
  • Early interaction with your baby
  • Breastfeeding basics

Schedule and Fees:

Group classes start on the first Monday of every month and run for 4 weeks. Private classes are based on availability. In order to reserve your spot, a $25 non-refundable deposit is due before the first class.
